semillero de lideres/jaden lidè yo
Semillero de Lideres is a summer leadership and learning program for youth aged 12–18. This includes (1) an academic enrichment curriculum designed to expose scholars to careers and opportunities in the arts, history, health, agriculture and law while encouraging language development (Spanish, English and Haitian Creole), leadership, and problem-solving skills; and (2) the Youth ACT (Analyzing Challenges Together) Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) Research Lab in which scholars learn how to use research to collect data and solve problems. Scholars receive a stipend for their program contributions and participation.

In this paid, month-long apprenticeship program, scholars complete 2 hours of daily professional development workshops for one month and are placed with local entrepreneurs and professionals to engage in 8–12 hours of hands-on work experience weekly. The local entrepreneurs span careers in public health and medicine, agriculture, entrepreneurship, law and education, and business and food service — each committed to training fellows two to three times per week. In addition to personalized mentorship, each fellow receives a seed microgrant to design and launch a community improvement project of their own. Scholars will receive ongoing mentorship for the year following their monthlong internship.

Through Partnership Projects, individuals and organizations from the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the diasporas collaborate on long-term projects aimed to create a sustainable local impact. These projects center the leadership of Semillero/Changemakers alumni and high school and college students from the diaspora in the United States. Previous partners have included Border of Lights, Reconocido, Yspaniola in Batey Libertad, and DREAM Project in Cabarete. Our projects have included the creation of an oral history documentary, the establishment of 4 murals with Azueï, and the fundraising of over $1,000 for local healthcare expenses and toward the construction of a community basketball court.
